Tomatillo - Grande Rio Verde

Rio Grande Verde – For the gardener looking for a plant that yields big fruits, this variety is the number one choice. The tomatillos are almost as big as apples!

Tomatillo's are a different species than tomatoes. Common names also include Mexican ground cherry or husk cherry

The "Rio Grande Verde" variety is larger than the Toma Verde. However the Toma Verde variety generally matures earlier.

Zone recommendation: The tomatillo is suitable for growing in zones 4-12 as an annual. In zones 10-11 it grows as a perennial.


Seed Starting: Plant in pairs as the Tomatillo does not self pollinate, you must plant more than one plant.

Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost. Tomatillo's take a long time to mature.

If you are seed saving, you wont have to worry as they will not cross pollinate with tomatoes.


Toxicity: The leaves, stems and husks are NOT edible!

Maturity: 75-100 days

Plant Spacing: 18-24 inches in between one another, with 36-48 inches between rows.

Full sun: at least 8 hours a day.

Seed Depth: 1/4-1/2 inch deep
