The Bidwell casaba melon is a large, football-shaped melon with a creamy texture, pleasant aroma, and a flavor similar to orange sherbet. Dr. Amy Goldman says “tastes like heavenly orange sherbet,” in her book Melons for the Passionate Grower.
This melon was grown by General John Bidwell, who received his seed stock from the USDA in 1869. He was a soldier in the Civil War and also became a U.S. senator. He grew this melon in Chico, California. It produces massive fruit that weigh about 16 lbs each and are football-shaped.
