The name of this heirloom cherry tomato, Riesentruaube, is German for "giant bunch of grapes." These small 1 Oz tomatoes grow in large clusters of 20 to 40 tomatoes and have a flavor similar to that of a Beefsteak tomato. It takes about 80 days to grow. This is an Indeterminate variety.
This European heirloom was grown by the Pennsylvania Dutch as early as 1856. The German name translates "giant bunches of grapes," an indication of the clustering habit of the developing tomatoes; the heavy bunches have been known to contain as many as 50 small, intensely flavored tomatoes. Riesentraube was introduced commercially in the United States in 1994 by Southern Exposure Seed Exchange.
