Cucumber - Brown Russian

The Brown Russian cucumber is a rare heirloom variety with brown skin and white flesh. It's a prolific, hardy plant that's valued for its appearance and taste.

Maturity: Approx. 55-60 Days from Planting

Growing Conditions: Thrives in full sun and well-drained soil with consistent moisture.

Planting time: Plant after last frost to plant seeds directly outdoors, or start seeds indoors a few weeks earlier for earlier harvest. 

Planting Depth: Sow seeds 1 inch deep

Spacing: Plant seeds 1/2 inch deep and 6 inches apart in rows spaced 6 feet apart. 

Support system: Provide a trellis or other climbing structure for the vines to grow on. 

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, watering deeply but avoiding waterlogging. 

Sunlight: Full sun exposure is best for optimal fruit production. 

Harvesting: Pick cucumbers when they reach their mature size, identified by their brown skin. 

Characteristics 

  • Appearance: Brown skin, light white flesh, and a net-like surface
  • Flavor: Crisp, mellow, and slightly sweet, with no bitterness
  • Uses: Fresh salads, sandwiches, garnishes, or pickled

Growing 

  • Sow seeds outdoors after the last frost date, 1/2 inch deep
  • Start indoors 3 weeks before the last frost date
  • Sow in hills 4–6 feet apart or in rows 2 feet apart
  • Thin to 3 plants per hill
  • Provide full sun

Other notes

  • Some say that Brown Russian cucumbers are the strangest looking but the best tasting cucumbers 
  • The cucumbers are best harvested at 5-7 inches in length
